Maxine
Groves, a fifth-generation quilter from Roane
County, West Virginia, was taught how to quilt by her
mother and grandmother. Now living in Adams County,
Ohio, Groves has earned quite a bit of regional renown
for her quilting. Her numerous honors and awards include
an Ohio Arts Council Master Apprentice award in 1999,
several awards from the annual Shawnee University Quilt
Exhibits, and the Key to the City of Ashland, Kentucky.
She has shown her work in shows and exhibitions throughout
Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, and she has lectured about
quilts and participated in several demonstration and
teaching workshops at festivals. Between April-December
2008, she was the featured artist at the Bob Evans Farm
and Heritage Museum in Rio Grande, Ohio; more than 50
of her quilts were displayed. Groves was the inspiration
for the National Quilt Trail public art program started
in 2001 by her daughter Donna
Sue Groves.
