Pereyma is a well-known textile artist and
resident of Troy who creates “fragile, non-functional
garments, iconic textiles and poetic sculptures”
incorporating such materials as flower petals, beeswax
and eggshells as well as a wide variety of fabrics.
Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Dayton
Visual Arts Center and Dayton Art Institute and in group
exhibitions in Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin,
Illinois and Washington, D.C. During the 2009 Cityfolk
Festival, Pereyma will be presenting a performance piece,
Yellow, in which she uses a historic Davis
treadle sewing machine (manufactured in Dayton by the
company that evolved into the Huffy bicycle company)
to quilt pieces of yellow satiny fabric on which she
has printed with the natural rust of steel implements.
According to Pereyma, maintaining a steady rhythm pumping
the foot treadles and “not sewing your hands into
the quilting project” is an apt metaphor for life.
