Simon
Shaheen is one of the most important traditional
Arab musicians of his generation as well as an eloquent
champion of Arab music and culture. Shaheen, a National
Heritage Fellowship winner in 1994, is universally acclaimed
for his border-spanning work with the groups Near Eastern
Music Ensemble and Qantara, performing a heady and compelling
Arab-Western fusion The Washington Post praises
as “eminently cosmopolitan.”
